ORS vs Electrolyte Drinks: What's the Difference?
ORS vs Electrolyte Drinks: What's the Difference?
ORS and commercial electrolyte drinks are often grouped together in everyday conversation, but they serve different purposes.
What is ORS?
Oral rehydration solution is a specific rehydration formulation designed for medical use, particularly to help prevent or treat dehydration associated with fluid loss such as diarrhoea. Its composition and use are not simply interchangeable with a flavoured electrolyte drink.
What is an electrolyte drink?
Commercial electrolyte drinks are products designed around hydration, convenience, taste and electrolyte replacement. Formulations vary widely, so the label matters.
Can an electrolyte drink replace ORS?
Not automatically. A commercial electrolyte drink should not be presented as a substitute for medically appropriate ORS. If you have illness-related dehydration or have been advised to use ORS, choose an appropriate ORS product and follow professional guidance.
Where SALTD fits
SALTD is a flavoured electrolyte drink mix made for everyday hydration occasions such as work, workouts, travel and hot days. SALTD is not an ORS product.
See the SALTD electrolyte drink collection for the current range.
